Recently, the team at Demolition Disaster Relief (DDR) successfully executed the controlled lowering and removal of four overhead gantry cranes in a single operational shift.
Here is an inside look at how thorough pre-construction planning and strict safety governance delivered a zero-incident outcome.
1. Meticulous Pre-Lift Site Preparation
A smooth lift day is built on the days of groundwork leading up to it. Prior to mobile cranes arriving on site, our team focused on de-risking the working footprint:
Site Clearing & Floor Remediation: Clearing debris and plant equipment across the warehouse deck to provide unrestricted access for dual mobile pick-and-carry cranes.
Exclusion Zones & Traffic Management: Establishing distinct drop zones and vehicle travel routes to ensure zero cross-traffic during active rigging operations.
Pre-Lift Mechanical Disconnections: Prepping fasteners, electrical feeds, and end-carriage brackets to ensure each crane beam was structurally secure yet ready for controlled release once rigged to tension.
Demolition Methodology: A clear and precise demolition methodology was created to ensure it was not only compliant, but also easy for the guys onsite to understand... and follow.
2. Engineering, Lift Plans & SWMS Compliance
High-risk dual-lift operations in confined indoor environments require strict engineering compliance. Before commencement:
Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS): Detailed SWMS were developed and reviewed, addressing dual-crane load sharing, swing clearances, and high-risk work near structural steel frameworks.
Morning Pre-Start & Toolbox Briefing: Operations began with an all-hands safety briefing. Every rigger, spotter, crane operator, and site supervisor reviewed load weights, center-of-gravity calculations, radio channels, and emergency stop protocols.

3. Flawless Execution with Knowles Cranes
Executing tandem lifts inside an industrial envelope demands skilled, accredited operators. Partnering with the experienced team at Knowles Cranes, two Franna mobile cranes were positioned in tandem to handle each crane bridge.
Load Balancing & Rigging: Rigging gear was attached according to lift plan and demolition methodology, tensioned to bear the calculated dead load, and double-checked by the lead dogman.
Synchronised Lowering: Operating in sync, both Franna cranes smoothly tracked and lowered the heavy gantry beams down from the runway rails to ground level with millimeter precision.
All four overhead cranes were grounded safely and efficiently without impact to surrounding building framework or structural columns.
4. Material Processing & Sustainable Recovery
Once lowered to the slab, the crane assemblies transitioned into the secondary phase of the project:
Controlled Oxy/LPG Hot Works: Dismantling long spans into transportable lengths under strict hot work permits and fire-watch controls.
Resource Recovery & Recycling: Structural steel, motors, and mechanical components were segregated to maximize scrap recycling rates and divert material from landfill.
